Comfy Town: Start Wearing Purple

Welcome everyone to my blog.  I am so excited to be a part of the Rebecca Page Comfy Town Blog Tour!  There have been some wonderful posts so far and some more planned.  Make sure to visit them all.  (I hear there are even some giveaways involved!)

Game day attire is quite a thing in the South.

While I like the idea of dressing up with team spirit, most of my Saturday afternoons are spent at home listening to the noise of the stadium just down the road and listening to the game on the radio.  My attire can be more comfy than stylish.

 

Before: Thrifted men’s 2XL tee

I love a bargain and while visiting my favorite thrift I found a JMU men’s 2XL tee for $1! I knew I could make that work.  Then at my second favorite thrift I found yards of a mysterious, probably polyester knit for $3.

I decided to refashion the tee using the (FREE!) Paris Party Top and sew up a pair of Pippa Pants from the fabric.  Both had been on my to-sew list for a while so this gave me good motivation. (Affiliation disclosure: I may earn a commission if you make a purchase using the link.)

 

 

For the top I tried it on to see what I liked (comfy and the logo.) I debated what to keep and decided on the original neckline and hems.  The new top cut into the sleeve area by a little bit.  I went with it and it just adds a gusset look to the underarm area.

 

 

I kept the original sleeve hems which was a nice time saver.  One of these days I’ll get a coverstitch machine or master a twin needle!

The Pippas were a no fuss, cut and serge.  They went together incredibly fast.  My only adjustment was a few inches off the leg (long lounge pants, stairs and clingy kiddos are a bad combo.)  I made the full length, regular leg, fold-over waist.  I can’t believe I didn’t make these sooner; I have a few more pairs planned now.

 

And with that, my comfy game day attire is ready for less than a tub of popcorn at the stadium!  I’m ready to cheer our team on to another title!

Image Placement with Cutting Boards

Sometimes placing the pattern pieces and cutting the fabric takes as long as sewing the project.  When I’m trying to get an image situated just right, I use a cutting board.

I buy flexible cutting boards from the Dollar Tree and then I trace the pattern onto it with a Sharpie and then cut it out (with paper scissors.)  It allows me to see where the image will end up so I can fussy cut it.

I also use it for pattern pieces that I will use a lot to add durability.

It’s beginning to look a lot…

 

I know my fabric stash is a bit ridiculous, but it was hard for me to pass up this Christmas fabric during a good sale this summer at Peek a Boo fabric shop I bought these pick up truck panels and coordinates for my boys (along with a few other things… cough cough…)

 

The fabric had been hanging out on my dryer when I finally decided on Rebecca Page’s Comfy Cowl pattern (affiliate link: no extra cost to you but I get something to help support this sewing habit!)

 

This was my first Comfy Cowl and I don’t know why I waited so long. I took the time to press and I always wonder why I skip that so often (bad seamstress!) I didn’t have enough of the coordinate fabric left for the hood so I picked some cheap Walmart striped knit.  It had been hanging out for a good six years in my stash. It was finicky so I didn’t top stitch the hood per the instructions. The Peek a Boo cotton Lycra was lovely to sew.

I’m ridiculously pleased with the results. It’s not even Thanksgiving but I have to share. He couldn’t be any cuter and it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

(True Story: Immediately following this shot I turned to my friend and told her I had gotten a great shot. With that, my kiddo face planted onto the sidewalk skinning up that beautiful nose.  Modeling is tough work!)

Found: Dinosaurs in a Cube

Toys left behind give me a glimpse into my children’s beautiful imaginations.

I stumbled upon this scene.

A cube unit that was first used for cloth diapers and then toddler shoes has been seeking a new home and purpose.

I moved it temporarily to the living room and apparently dinosaurs now occupy it.
